Woe is we: Denial of white male privilege

I recently read a news story about an organization, The Former Majority Association for Equality, which is raising scholarship funds specifically for white males. The group’s founder says that while many scholarships are available to women and minorities, he had difficulty finding scholarships for white men, which was why he started the organization. My concern in this matter is not that he is choosing to raise funds just for white men; I think everyone should have the opportunity to attend college and find ways to pay for it. My concern is that in 2011, our college students are not educated enough to understand the advantages that stem from a legacy of white male privilege.

Shade-ism: On the black side

In general, I couldn’t care less about the cultural commentary of Lil Wayne, but an article I read recently hit a sore spot. A fan is urging a boycott of Weezy because of his apparent dislike of dark-skinned black women.  For those of us who have heard his lyrics, this comes as no surprise. I’m just kind of shocked that this type of color prejudice among black people still exists.
